Our home away from home... Rifle River
Our River Cabin Adventures
Welcome to our adventures on the river. So this is our first year owning a second home and it just happens to be a cute little cabin on the river that we are madly in love with. Here in Michigan if you have an up north home, most people call it a cottage. But this always reminds me of those little cute cottages on the lake with all that decor that says 'Lake Life' and the decor is all blue and white, which is super cute, but on the river we are a bit more woodsy and rustic. I wanted our cabin to have that woodsy and super cozy feel, so CABIN it is! We are about two hours away from our little escape and visit every weekend. This is not our main home, so for our decor I wanted it to feel different, not like I am walking into our home. We put in a dark brown leather couch and recliner that we already had at our other home, our American flag coffee table came with the cabin so of course we are keeping that and added a moose rug under it, some older lamps that we had up in the attic added a nice touch, and I found a set of bear lamps as well on the cheap that just fit perfectly. And of course, my throw pillows that I add and switch out as the seasons change which is such a inexpensive way to change up your decor and I love buying and making my own pillow covers.
Bedroom
I found bear theme lamps and bought two of them, this is decorated a bit for Christmas so i added my old man on top of dresser and a Christmas present on the dresser as well.
Living Room
The table and gun cabinet came with the cabin and were a perfect look for the living room.
My handsome mountain man hubby and myself over winter last year. First time he grew his beard that long... ummm....I loved it. Now I just have to wait for winter again for it to be back as he shaved. Boo!
My first Walleye. So there is a story behind this fish and it's true because I had a witness! I was fishing and my husband said he was hoping I would catch a walleye. Well, I was not even sure what they looked like but I knew what a Red Horse sucker fish looked like because i had just caught several. Well, here i am reeling in to check on my worm, and bam...fish on! As soon as I saw the fish i knew it was not a Red Horse, but still did not know it was a walleye but i was excited it might be. I'm reeling and get it in close to me, I am very close to the river and the Walleye jumped off my line just before i could pull it out and jumped back into the water. Ugh..no! But ....as quick as my father in law could groan behind me seeing me lose the fish i stepped into the water and grabbed it with my hands so fast! I snatched that fish right out of the water, it was not getting away! Nobody would of beleived me, but luckily my father in law was right there and witnesssed it. Haha!
This is called a Red Horse Sucker Fish. I caught SOOOO many of these fish. I guess they are not great for eating but so fun to catch. He does not look amused does he? He was released with the hook taken out. Sorry fish!! He looks super annoyed with me. Look at those eyes! Spring 2021
He got a little muddy, I dropped him, ugh! But I still needed a picture before I released this fish back to the river.
Smallmouth Bass - Yes, at this point everyone I am considering myself a professional fishing woman and waking up early running out door before my husband can even sip his coffee with a 'where you going!" ummm.... "Fishing , Bye!!"
My first Brown Trout Why not let my hubby pose with my first brown trout, after all I was thinking i had hit the river of plenty. My first kayak trip down the river even tricked me as I could literally see all the rocks under me as dozens of fishies swam past me as I leaned over in my kayak ooooh and awwwwing about how cool it was trying not to fall out. While I was thinking fish just were in the river everywhere waiting for my worm, my husband informed me that they do 'runs', and that no, the fishing would not be like this everytime and that i had to wait for the times the fish were running. Ohhhhhh! Well....maybe if I had known that i would of posed with my first trout, as I never caught another one yet. Hmmmppf! LOL! I am determined to catch one again though!

Building up our river edge. We have spent hours and hours throwing rocks. It is pretty addicting once you get started! None of those rocks were there before. Walking in front of our home in the river is a lot less risky of twisting an ankle now as we have moved hundreds of rocks and it's becoming a bit sandy beachy feeling now! I work on the rocks as much as I can and the big ones my hubby moved with the help of straps and a 4 wheeler to pull it over to set it. Not bad for our first summer of being able to do some work in the river. It will enventually be completed with a small dock as well.
My daughter and I at the cabin during winter. Her first time on a snowmobile.
It was a super chilly day but this was my first time in the river! I put on some waders and off I went. And no, that is not a fishing spear! lol. I simply was holding a stick for balance as the river moves pretty quickly! Nov - 2020
Pileated woodpecker that likes to visit. See the length of the bird feeder behind him? This is a pretty large bird. So pretty to see.
My favorite cabin decor ideas. Decorating a cabin or cottage really takes creativity as you are usually working with a smaller space. Our cabin is only around 900 sq feet, so I am always thinking of ways to utilize our space in the best possible way. When you have a kitchen that only has a few cabinets in the kitchen and not a lot of counter space you really need to think of what is the best way to decorate for your space. I quickly learned this, and one of the ways I love to use my space is by taking advantage of the walls.
